What's left now?
SAM's:
OPEN SUSE Linux Unleashed w 10.3 DVD by Michael McCallister.
FEDORA UNLEASED by Andrew and Paul Hudson with Fedora 8 ;
and another with Fedora 6 on DVD/s. [ I primarily use FC8 now on my laptop and may review this book, but I've become an extremely grumpy linux reviewer.
And:
The APACHE MODULES Book from Prentice Hall, by Nick Kew c 2006.

Here's my transcription of the Ubuntu Unleashed review , reviewer didn't include his name on the page he handed me. - Bruce

UBUNTU UNLEASHED

Ubuntu Unleashed is definitely not a book for a newbie . Too many important issues confronting a person new to the Linux Operating are left unanswered . Partitioning of hard drives preparatory to installing the Ubuntu distribution is glossed over . And also advice for backing up is spartan .
However " Ubuntu Unleashed " gives the reader of this manual the ability to sample some of the utilities and programs that are included in the Ubuntu distribution of the Linux system . Like many distributions it includes a plethora of programs , some of which are useful . You will get introduced to PHP Scripts , Python . and Perl . However , you are only given an introduction to these . A few basic scripts are included and I suppose these are meant to encourage you to further your education in these languages by other means .

Before you can use Ubuntu you must first install it on your computer . Heres where I have a big falling out with the book . Most people who migrate to Linux do so from the Microsoft platform . And most keep their Microsoft system and end up with a dual booting system . So an important step is to properly partition the hard drive to have both systems . The partitioning advice given in this book is so pathetic as to cause me to not give this book a favorable rating . This also goes for the chapter on backing up your system . With some decent advice on partitioning , the backup advice becomes a much more viable option . Then the user need only back up the /usr or /home folders . A sensible partitioning system also makes updates to the operating system easier .

This manual will give you good practice in using the command line . Here is Ubuntu Unleashed strong point . The use of the command line in a terminal is considered by aficionados of the Linux system to be the ultimate way to work . Every chapter is filled with examples and so may be a great help to learning the Linux system and then living up to the title of the book .
